Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

American Cancer Society- ParamCARE Foundation has taken part in the American Cancer Society making Strides against breast cancer walk. An event has conducted on October 26, 2014 at New Jersey Convention and Exposition center, Edison, NJ. A great event has conducted to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer. Around 6,000 participants have taken part in this event. This event support fund raises and awareness to support breast cancer research to better understand, prevents, evaluate disease and treat them.

This study is being conducted by researchers of Rutgers cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Chronic Disease Self Managment Workshop

ParamCARE Foundation organized the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program for South Asians in partnership with the Middlesex County Office of Health Services, every Tuesday from August 5 to September 9, 2014. The workshop was attended by individuals who actually had one or more chronic diseases or their care givers.
The participants were educated on management of Nutrition, physical activity, medications, and strategies for problem solving, making action plans that are feasible, decision making, and effective communication with health care providers and also about evaluation of treatment, all based on Stanford model of Chronic Disease Self-management Program.

Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Program

ParamCARE Foundation, in partnership with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Community Health Promotion program conducted the first session of the Diabetes Wellness and Prevention Program for South Asians on 17th April, 2014 at the Robert Wood Johnson Fitness and Wellness Center in Parlin, NJ. This program with series of classes and workshops has been organized to educate the South Asian Community with Diabetes or Pre diabetes on how to manage Nutrition, Physical Activity, Medications, and also on ways to lead a healthy and productive life with diabetes. A group of 17 people with either history of diabetes or pre diabetes were recruited to participate in the program.
As part of the first session, the participants were educated on Causes, Types, Symptoms, Complications and the role of exercise in managing diabetes. They were also provided free glucose monitors, test strips, were taught on how to use them and maintain a blood glucose log. The entire event proceedings were translated to Gujarati with the help of an interpreter for the benefit of the non-English speaking population.

All education materials related to management of diabetes were translated to Gujarati and were distributed to the participants. The participants enthusiastically participated in the discussion and showed a lot of interest in attending events like this in the future as well.
The future sessions are designed to include the other aspects of diabetes management such as: meal planning, carbohydrate counting, estimating portion sizes, live cooking demonstrations, medications, prevention and management of complications, and management of blood sugar imbalances.
We would like to thank RWJUH Community Health Promotions program for partnering with us and the media for covering this event, and also helping us spread awareness not only about Diabetes, but also about occurrence of such events in the community.
ParamCARE Foundation is very proud to be conducting events like this to raise awareness in the community especially in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

Zumba for Healthcare Workers

ParamCARE Foundation organized a Zumba session for the home health care professionals at its facility in Iselin, New Jersey on 3/31/14. Zumba Instructor for Robert Wood Johnson Fitness and Wellness Center Ms Kirti Patel conducted the session. Over 25 home health aides participated in the training session and found it enjoyable and energizing.
We at ParamCARE foundation understand the importance of caring for the care givers and are proud to be organizing such events that would serve as stress relievers for them.

Chronic Disease Self Management Program Community Workshop

ParamCARE Foundation hosted an awareness session on 1/26/14 at its facility in Iselin to inform about and also enroll participants for the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Community Workshop it will be hosting and be provided by The Middlesex County Office of Health Services from the first week of February, every Tuesday for 6 weeks.

The workshop created by Stanford University and sponsored by NJ Department of Human Services, is intended for people with any ongoing or long term health condition or their care givers to help them learn 1) to manage their symptoms, 2) to get started with healthy eating and exercise, 3) to communicate effectively with healthcare providers, 4) to manage fear, anger and frustration and 5) to make daily tasks easier.
Chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and mental illness being a big burden in the community, our organization understands the need for workshops like these which will improve self-management skills among the people with long term health issues and thereby reduce morbidity and mortality related to them.

The workshop attendees were highly enthusiastic about participating in the workshop and interacting with the leaders. They were very appreciative of the fact that the program has made a lot of difference in their life style for the good and that they are interested in propagating the information they learnt to others in the community.

Our organization intends to continue providing such workshops in the future specially keeping in mind the need to language, educational level and culturally appropriate programs that will help us reach out to the majority of the community.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Event

ParamCARE foundation hosted a Cervical Cancer Awareness event in observance of the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month on 1/26/14 in Iselin, NJ. Inaugurating the event, Mr. Vipul, Amin Director of ParamCARE foundation spoke to the participants about the need for increased awareness among the public about signs and symptoms of cancers like these and the facilities available for early detection. Proper utilization of these services might help reduce the burden of cancers in the community and pave way for building a healthier community, he said.
Mr. Jim Major, Councilman, Iselin and Menlo Park Terrace were also present at the event. Mr. Major spoke on why it is very important to know about how these cancers affect women and how it presents so that it can be recognized early and treated on time to prevent serious consequences.
This event was conducted in partnership with the Chronic Disease Coalition for Middlesex and Union Counties, which ParamCARE Foundation has been an active member of, since its inception. Health Educator from the Coalition was present to give an Educational presentation on Cervical Cancer. Apart from that the participants were shown how a normal cervix looks and also the appearance of cancer at various stages, through artificial educational models.
The participants showed a lot of interest in understanding how the cancer presents and also on how to get screened. Educational materials and information on free and low cost screening resources were provided to all those who participated.
